I came to meditation quite by chance. Initially, the decision to enroll in a meditation course simply stemmed from a cherished plan to open a small flower tea shop – a place combining the tranquility of meditation with the rustic tones of traditional music.

When I first entered the class, to be honest, I carried some hesitation due to differences in faith backgrounds. But then, I chose to open my heart, ready to embrace new perspectives and beautiful life philosophies from another religion. Up to now, although I am only halfway through the journey, I have truly touched and connected with the original values that meditation brings.

From a scientific and psychological perspective, meditation is a wonderful therapy that helps soothe the central nervous system. It shifts the brain from a state of stress (Beta waves) to a state of deep relaxation (Alpha and Theta waves). The practice of meditation helps reduce cortisol levels – the stress hormone, while creating a necessary "pause" to clear the mind, thereby helping the brain recover and work much more sharply and effectively afterward. I realized that, although its origins are often associated with religious elements, the core essence of meditation – mindfulness and returning fully to the present – truly does not belong to any single religion.

And in that journey of experiencing tranquility, one of the methods I am most passionate about, the most rustic one, is Gratitude Meditation.

Today, let's pour ourselves a warm cup of tea, relax our shoulders, and learn about this practice together.

  1. What is gratitude meditation?

Gratitude meditation does not require complex techniques or overly elaborate postures. It is simply a time when we actively direct our focus toward the good things existing around and within ourselves.

Instead of letting the mind chase after shortcomings, pressures, or unfulfilled expectations, we choose to "anchor" our emotions in appreciation. Maintaining gratitude is like sowing good seeds, helping to nourish positive energy, soothe sorrows, and bring deep balance to the body.

  1. 3 steps to practice gratitude meditation every day

You can practice gratitude meditation early in the morning to welcome the new day, or in the evening before going to bed to clear your mind.

Step 1: Prepare a pure space Find a quiet little corner

Healing always comes from what is most natural, so prioritize an airy, fresh space, staying away from artificial scents. You can leave the window slightly open to catch the breeze. Sit in the most comfortable posture, keeping your back naturally straight so that your blood and breath can flow easily.

Step 2: Connect with your breath Close your eyes and start with three deep breaths.

  • Inhale: Feel the cool stream of air bringing life into your body.

  • Exhale: Let go of all worries, fatigue, and lingering thoughts. Let your breathing happen naturally, without forcing it. You just need to act as an "observer" of your own breathing rhythm.

Step 3: Awaken gratitude

When the mind has settled, silently name 3 things you feel grateful for in the present moment. They don't have to be macro or grand things:

  • Gratitude for the body: Thank your bright eyes for seeing life, thank your heart that is still beating resiliently, thank your hands that have always worked hard every day.

  • Gratitude for all things: A warm morning sunbeam, a cup of richly flavored herbal tea, or a soothing piece of traditional music you just happened to hear.

  • Gratitude for connections: Gratitude for a relative who understands, a friend who listens, or even the past stumbles that have molded you into the steady person you are today.

Keep that warm, joyful feeling when thinking about those things in your chest for a few minutes, allowing the appreciation to truly permeate every cell.

  1. The spread of healing energy

When you practice gratitude meditation regularly, you will notice a miraculous change. Your perspective on the world becomes more tolerant and calmer. The peaceful energy from within you will naturally spread to those around you – in every look, every word, or the way you face everything.

Like the sound of a small bell ringing in a pure lotus pond, though not noisy, those quiet ripples have the power to move and soothe a whole space. Your peace is the same.
